If you’re in the market for a fast-working antivirus program, VirusBarrier X5 (10.5.2) is the gold standard. VirusBarrier X5’s main interface is far from the standard Mac interface, but after using the program for a while you get used to the Orb, the large green sphere in the middle, which gives you access to VirusBarrier X5’s major controls.

(VirusBarrier has three modes: Interactive, in which you decide what to do with suspect files Repair, which automatically tries to repair virus-laden files and, new in X5, Put In Quarantine Zone, which moves those naughty files to a restricted area where they can’t be opened or activated). You can see at a glance how much of your Mac’s processing power VirusBarrier is using, what mode it is in, the number of scheduled scans you have programmed, and more. The interface may look alien, but it’s very easy to use. It is unlike any interface I have ever seen in a Mac program. The manual scan is a little more resource intensive, but I hardly noticed it running while I went about my business. The real-time scanner constantly scans your Mac’s files in the background, but it didn’t slow down my test Mac (a 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro) in the slightest. This antivirus program scans files very quickly and, perhaps more important, with very little impact on your Mac’s resources.VirusBarrier has two ways of scanning your Mac: real-time and manual. But VirusBarrier’s speed more than makes up for all its shortcomings. VirusBarrier X5 (version 10.5.2) bills itself as simple, fast, and nonintrusive, and it certainly lives up that billing, with the notable exception of the program’s nonstandard interface.
